Just got home from seeing Judy Collins at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center). What a wonderful performance. We were transported back in time. It was a memorable evening.
I have come to love SOPAC and all of the events they have to offer.

NJ Tennis Clubs Along the Midtown Direct Train Line

There are some wonderful places to play tennis in New Jersey along the Midtown Direct Train line from South Orange to Morristown and in the adjacent communites as well.
In fact, South Orange has its own version of Wimbledon at Orange Lawn with grass courts, mandatory white tennis attire and a new clubhouse equipped for elaborate catering for parties of all sizes.
CenterCourt Athletic Club of Chatham is currently under construction as it prepares for the upcoming paddle season, open indoor court time, and a full service health facility.

South Orange NJ Home Sales First Half 2008

South Orange, NJ home sales for the first six months of 2008 saw a 19% drop in volume and a 10% drop in average price of homes sold versus last year.
The good news is that buyers are continuing to view properties in town and that homes that are priced well are selling. Average Days on Market are up only 1% over the first six months of 2007. Â
So if you are looking for a 3-4 bedroom home thirty minutes from New York City, South Orange has wonderful values with the average price of homes sold currently at $575,503.

Commuting To NYC From South Orange

Commuting via Midtown Direct to Manhattan or Hoboken from South Orange, New Jersey?Â
If you don’t live within a short enough distance to the South Orange Train Station on Sloan Street (depending on your desire, the size of your heels and your pre-coffee stamina) you can always hop onto the three different Jitney’s that scoot around South Orange in the morning and afternoon.
Within minutes you can be on the Midtown Direct Train into New York City (Penn Station) or into Hoboken (to catch the PATH or Ferry).Â

Permits may be purchased in person at the Parking Authority offices in Village Hall, second floor, between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday thru Friday. Certain permits and renewals may be handled by mail, if the application is accompanied by photocopies of the necessary documents and a check or money order.
Parking Permits are also available through the South Orange Parking Authority and NJ Transit…There is currently a waiting list for both.

Deer Hunt Closes South Mountain Reservation

South Mountain Reservation is Closed Between Millburn and West Orange for a Deer Hunt.Â
Don’t plan on driving through the South Mountain on Tuesdays and Thursdays from January 29-February 28, 2008. Trained Marksmen Will Be On Site to take care of the “Deer Problem.”
One of my fondest memories growing up in Short Hills was going to the Deer Paddock with my parents just off South Orange Ave between Old Short Hills Road and Brookside Drive. I loved to see “Bambi” and feed he and his brothers and sisters.
Now the deer are everywhere. The Essex County Deer Management Program is “taking care of the situation.” Needless to say, neighbors in Millburn, Short Hills, Maplewood, South Orange and West Orange are taking strong stands…on both sides.

SOPAC: Jay Johnson:The Two and Only Tonight

Run, Don’t Walk, to see Jay Johnson: The Two and Only at SOPAC
Tonight, Saturday, January 26th at 8 PM
Short Hills resident Dan Whitten won a Tony in 2007 for Best Special Theatrical Event for this one-person ventriloquism show he helped produced.
Whitten was also the lead producer for Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris which was the longest running new off-Broadway show of 2006-2007.
I had the pleasure, thanks to Dan, to see Jersey Boys before it opened!!! It deserved each one of its four 2006 Tony Awards, especially the one for Best Musical.

South Orange Dog Park…Nor’Easter That Wasn’t

I took a drive through the South Mountain Reservaton just after the “storm” on Thursday.
They predicted, snow, sleet, freezing rain…all we really got was a beautiful landscape.
Turning off South Orange Avenue into the South Orange Dog Park I stopped to check out the view and was rewarded with some beautiful pix.
My favorite was in front of the Dog Run.
